2 picture(s) Appraisal : 250/350 €
Hammer price : 320 €LOT N°050
Cross of Boulogne in 18k (750 thousandths) yellow gold, atypical for its many bumps forming the cross. The filigree underlines the Boulogne origin, as the thread is twisted, reminiscent of the ropes used by sailors. This is the origin of a technique imported in the 16th century by Spanish silversmiths who had settled in the Spanish-ruled Netherlands, a territory geographically very close to Boulogne. Diamond-shaped, it ends in what is known as a grelot, a small movable sphere. It is a cross generally offered as a promise of marriage to the wives of sailors and fishermen. This cross has numerous dents and small missing pieces, but will not go unnoticed by collectors of regional jewelry. No hallmark. Probably made around 1850.
Dimensions: 5.5 x 3.5 cm.
Gross weight: 4.3 g. -
