Very large and exceptional pear cabochon-cut Welo opal of 31.18 ct. with a very nice thickness and bright fires in the form of non-directional confetti in orange/red, green/yellow and electric blue. A beautiful gem!
Dimensions: 4.7 x 1.7 x 0.7 cm.
Expert's note: Opals don't bring bad luck! Unless you believe the ending of Walter Scott's 1829 novel, in which Hermione, daughter of a Persian magician, receives holy water on her stone and disappears, leaving nothing but dust. The novel is entitled "Anne de Geierstein" and is set in the middle of the Franco-Burgundian conflict near Nancy at the end of the 15th century. It's a little light on bad luck, but the story did do the gem a great deal of damage. It was its use in Art Nouveau jewelry that restored its lustre!
