Monica Vitti symbolized an entire period in Italian cinema, one that transformed an inability to communicate into poetry.  In May, 1968, Vitti was part of the Cannes Film Festival jury.  Like Roman Polanski and Louis Malle, she too would resign in solidarity with Festival protesters.  Indeed, the Festival would shut down the following day.
