Lot 2

Appraisal :

600/1200 €

Hammer price :

800 €
Square step cut red spinel of 1,37 ct. of possible Burmese origine. The deep red color appears sometimes orangey under artificial light. Very pure. A feather can be seen under one of the edges.
Dimensions : 6,39 x 6,39 x 3,82 mm.

Expert notes :
Rarer than rubies, the red spinel is one of the most resistant stones in which the color is entirely natural. Confused for centuries with the ruby, the latter’s value on the gemstones’ market has not stopped increasing. Famous spinels include the ‘Côte-de-Bretagne’, once owned by Anne de Bretagne and conserved at the Louvre Museum, as well as the famous Black Prince’s Ruby, first mentioned in the middle of the 14th century, on the front of the Imperial State Crown of the United-Kingdom.
