A lot of opals, including a large one on matrix weighing 28.4 ct, transparent to opaque banch opals, some with nice fires, for 15 ct, two opal doublets of poor quality, an opal broken in two for 2.15 ct, and a lot of nine small opals, including a pairing of hearts for 1.65 ct. 7 picture(s) Appraisal : 4500/5500 €
Hammer price : 0 €LOT N°165
Very large and exceptional pear cabochon-cut Welo opal of 31.18 ct. with a very nice thickness and bright fires in the form of non-directional confetti in orange/red, green/yellow and electric blue. A beautiful gem!
Dimensions: 4.7 x 1.7 x 0.7 cm.
Expert's note: Opals don't bring bad luck! Unless you believe the ending of Walter Scott's 1829 novel, in which Hermione, daughter of a Persian magician, receives holy water on her stone and disappears, leaving nothing but dust. The novel is entitled "Anne de Geierstein" and is set in the middle of the Franco-Burgundian conflict near Nancy at the end of the 15th century. It's a little light on bad luck, but the story did do the gem a great deal of damage. It was its use in Art Nouveau jewelry that restored its lustre! -
